Apple cancels electric car project, 2,000 people switch to AI

Today, citing inside sources, theApple Inc.has shelved and canceled all development plans for a self-driving electric car. It's been more than a decade since the Apple car project was launched, during which billions of dollars were invested, but it was ultimately decided that it wasn't a viable project.

People familiar with the matter said Apple disclosed the decision to internal employees on Tuesday, shocking the nearly 2,000 employees involved in the project. Apple's chief operating officer, Jeff Williams, and Kevin Lynch, vice president of the project, are said to have made the difficult decision.

The two executives informed employees that the program will begin to be scaled back gradually, and that numerous members of the automotive team (known as the Special Projects Group, or SPG) will be moved to the AI department, where those employees will focus on driving the generative AI program, which has become an increasingly important strategic focus for Apple.

Apple's automotive team also includes hundreds of hardware engineers and automotive designers, who could also face reassignment to other Apple teams. Apple will make layoffs, but the exact number of layoffs is not yet known. Apple declined to comment on the news.
